What are second- and third-level domains?by Mohan Kapoor, Supervisor, Himalayan WebsitesLocated immediately to the left of the last dot is the second-level domain, e.g. "helloyou" in the following picture. The second level-domain is one of your own choosing when you register a domain. It often refers to an organisation such as "www.netnews.org", a search engine such as "www.google.com" or a museum such as "www.roerich.org". The third level domain in the example is contained in the string "computech", usually describing a department of a larger organisation. Third level domains cannot be registered but are in use for practical reasons by the owner of the second-level domain. Theoretically someone might also make use of fourth-, fifth- or sixth-level domains and so on. In fact one can go up to 127 levels but to use more than four makes seldom sense. helloyou web services by Clearing Systems Inc. |
