20 - 80% Packet Loss [ServePath Data Centre]

by John Keagy, President ServePath, 02 April 2003

Approximately half of ServePath customers experienced intermittent periods of 20 - 80% packet loss from approximately 6:00 to 7:00 Pacific Standard Time, 2:00 - 3:00 GMT. During this time period the ServePath trouble ticket system was periodically inaccessible.

A Cisco PA-GE gigabit ethernet card failed on one of our Cisco access routers that we deployed just last night. This router and card had burned-in since last week but this is the second time that we have experienced a PA-GE card failure. Fortunately, we keep spare equipment on hand and didn't have to wait for Cisco to deliver replacement equipment on our 4-hour on-site service contract. Unfortunately, although we had our top Staff on hand at the moment, we made some errors in diagnosing the situation which caused a delay.

For those of you that are wondering, yes, we have installed the hardware necessary to implement Cisco HSRP and our implementation of OSPF last night went as planned. If you have any questions please let us know.

Thank you for your patience and understanding,

John Keagy
President
