Major Denial of Service Attacks (DDoS)
[ServePath Data Centre]
by John Keagy, President ServePath, 14 March 2003
Traffic is now back to normal but two ServePath customers experienced
major denial of service attacks (DDoS) this afternoon, Friday, March 14
(PST). Some customers experienced approximately 90 minutes of excessive
packet loss on certain routes during and after the attacks.
One of the attacks was approximately 60 Mbps and the other exceeded 150
Mbps. The new tool that we have for determining
the source IP address of these attacks did not perform as expected and
caught us when our Senior Routing Engineer was
literally "out to lunch". We quickly mitigated the attacks but
one of our main distribution switches exhibited erratic behavior that
resulted in further latency. The distribution switch has now been restored
to normal function.
Fortunately, we already have a far more powerful Cisco model in our facility,
with a scheduled upgrade to take place on Monday.
We also have additional spare distribution switches on-site.
Two pieces of good news:
-
We have hired a new Customer Service Manager, Janet Cornell. Janet
is the former Director of Support Operations at both Above.Net and
Telegis Networks and is proven to know how to build top quality support
operations for fast growing Internet companies. One of Janet's first
projects will be to improve the network status information that is
provided at my.servepath.com. Many customers have asked for better
information regarding network status and you will get it.
-
The router upgrade last night went exactly as planned. The new core
router and distributed routing architecture is already
making an impact in improving reliability, performance and will greatly
improve our scalability.
Thank you for your continued support of ServePath.
Best regards,
